What to expect

What happens at the initial consultation?
Your first appointment will be longer than subsequent sessions, as it is essential to achieve a thorough, 'holistic' understanding of you and your health. Questions asked include your symptoms, medical history, diet, sleep pattern, energy levels and emotional state. This is followed by a brief, non-invasive, physical examination. This enables the underlying pattern of disharmony to be identified and the most effective, personalised treatment plan to be formulated. Acupuncture aims to treat the root cause of your health problems rather than just the presenting symptoms.

How often will I need treatment?
Each person is unique and therefore the number of treatments required depends on the individual. In some cases improvement can be noticed almost immediately, whilst in other patients it may take a little longer. Treatments are usually weekly to begin with and, as your condition improves, frequency of treatments will lessen. Generally, frequency of treatment depends on the severity of the imbalance. The longer you have had a condition, the longer it may take to respond to treatment. However, people tend to feel not only a benefit to their main complaint but also an overall improvement in general health and wellbeing.

What does acupuncture feel like?
Acupuncture needles are very fine (almost hair-like) and when inserted the sensation felt is often described as a dull ache or tingling and is only a momentary discomfort, if any at all.
